Part 4: Introduction to Schizoanalysis Introduces Deleuze and Guattari's privileging of desire over power and suggests the use of Schizophrenia to interrogate capitalist production of desire. I remember believing that Deleuze was rigorous but that Guattari was frivolous; I read The Fold but scorned Anti-Oedipus. And a couple of years later they come out with a text called Anti-Oedipus. Deleuze had heard of Guattari, and he pursued him in a sense. He studied at the Sorbonne under Georges Canguilhem and Jean Hyppolite. Rhizome; deterritorialization; pack multiplicities; schizoanalysis; desiring-machines; body without organs. That was Now, it's Guattari and his free wheeling schizoanalysis that turns me on. The writings we will deal with here are Capitalism and Schizophrenia: Anti-Oedipus (first published in French in 1972) and A Thousand Plateaus (first published in French in 1980). The discussion of machinic mapping versus representational tracing in the opening plateau of A Thousand Plateaus, Deleuze and Guattari claim that schizoanalysis, or rhizomatics, or whatever you want to call it, is itself a praxis, a doing. They meet in 1969, they start writing, thinking, brainstorming. According to Deleuze and Guattari schizophrenia can be seen as an extreme mental state which co-exists with the capitalist system of society for capitalism enforces neurosis in effort to maintain an appearance of normalcy. The French philosopher Vincent Descombes once described Deleuze and Guattari's Anti-Oedipus and Lyotard's Libidinal Economy as manifestations of what he called “mad black Hegelianism”. Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995), a philosopher, was born in France. A Thousand Plateaus, an immense book as encyclopedic and excessive as Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, delivered the schizoanalysis Anti-Oedipus outlined, though now Deleuze and Guattari called it “nomad thought” or “nomadology.” A Thousand Plateaus is less strictly academic than its predecessor and far more loony. (1999) Deleuze and Guattari's Anti-Oedipus: Introduction to Schizoanalysis. The text is made up not of chapters but of—you guessed it—plateaus.
